Straight outta Port Charles

April 8th, 2015

Never a trust a history of hip-hop that doesn’t mention this happenin’ cut…

…which cracked the Top 50 singles charts in the summer of 1981, ophthalmologist making it one of the earliest rap songs to do so.

Subject matter aside, it marked the birth of geekcore in the most primordial sense.

Still know all the words to this, even after so many years. And so much of this info is still relevant today on the show. Luke is still there, Heather is still showing up and dealing with her LSD-induced psychosis. Dr. Noah Drake’s son is a major character, the mob is still an issue and the baby Susan had with Alan is the ever-popular Jason.

I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this before. At one point my Dad was laid off and he whiled away the days watching soap operas, so I’m actually familiar with some of the things mentioned in that song. I now Top 50 isn’t exactly blazing up the charts, but that’s still higher than I would expect something so narrow niche and specific to go.
