A long time ago there were pirates
Beaming in waves from the sea
Now all the stations are silent
‘Cos they haven’t got a government license

Welcome to the next incarnation of Armagideon Time. I’m glad you could make it.
As you may have heard (or perhaps experienced firsthand), there has been a crackdown on music bloggers during the past few weeks, resulting in entire posts — not just links to copyright-infringing material — being summarily deleted. I’m not going to pontificate about the ethics of music blogging, though I think overall it does the artists and labels more good than harm, but I don’t think the powers that be are doing themselves any favors by swinging truncheons when a light tap on the shoulder and a polite warning would work just as well.
Music blogs, especially the ones on the lower end of the popularity heirarchy that have been especially singled out, are easy targets. Cracking down on those small fish allows enforcement people to pad their kill totals and present the illusion of progress to their bosses while rips of insider-leaked advance copies of anticipated big releases flow unimpeded onto the torrent circuit.
Adding to the Keystone Coppery tenor of the procedings is the fact that several of the targeted posts featured materials freely distributed to bloggers for PR purposes. I’m not saying that outright piracy isn’t a problem for the recording industry, but it seems to me that a complete lack of internal coordination within these corporations ought be a greater source of concern when it comes to the bottom line.
While I have been lucky (or, ha ha, influential) enough to dodge the takedown notice bullet so far, the growing atmosphere of paranoia has got me second-guessing myself and wasting too much time peeping over my shoulder. It has also made me finally confront something that has been rattling ’round my in the back of my head for some time now.
I’ve been doing Armagideon Time for two and a half years now. When I got the (misguided) urge to start up my own blog back in May 2006, I considered a couple thematic avenues of approach. I settled on music because the comics blogging field was pretty crowded and music blogging offered more opportunities to stray off-subject while maintaining an overall focus.
And it worked really well…for a good while, at least. I’ve met a lot of great people, gotten some modest (but incredibly flattering) praise and wider attention, and have exorcised a lot of creative demons in the process. There came a point, however, towards the beginning of this year when the process of doing musical annotations for non-musical topics began to feel more and more like a crutch and a straightjacket.
I had to work harder to justify posting songs that often felt were simply bribes to convince folks to read whatever nonsense I felt like rambling about on a given day. Sizable hitcounts and aggregator referrals are fine and all, but they also involve a high percentage of chew and screw visitors who come for the download link and fuck off back to their corner of the internet. On the other hand, there were an increasing number of visitors who made it clear that they were coming for the writing rather than the music…which baffles me even as it makes my heart swell to bursting with pride.
I’d rather have an engaged readership than a large one, and given the present state of the music blogging world, I realized it would be better if I moved forward on my own terms instead of spinning my wheels until the inevitable day of reckoning came along. The crackdown wasn’t the deciding factor, it just gave me an opportunity to reassess my priorities (even though I do feel a little sad about leaving).
What does all of this mean for Armagideon Time? A new self-hosted website and address for starters. (I’m still tweaking things and getting used to how WordPress works, so pardon the occasional bit of oddness.) The subject matter of the posts (political, retrological, provincial, idiotical) will continue to adhere to the high standards I’ve set, only minus the music links (except perhaps for rare cases where music is the focus of a post). I’ve also decided to fold pronounced WOO-BIN into the new, improved Armagideon Time as a recurring feature, which will keep both the conceit and myself from burning out too quickly.
So there you have it. I hope you’ll stick around, if only to see my planned take on food blogging. It promises to be an interesting experience.

And I’ll happily follow you into this new arena.

Speaking as one for whom the music was a secondary concern, I’m happy. If it was bugging you to begin with, yeah — glad you dropped it. It’s not like people can’t dig up your reccs on their own, if they’re so inclined.
Love the new digs.

Hooray on your snazzy new digs! As a housewarming dish, I brought you this delicious tuna hot loaf. Don’t try to eat it and type at the same time!
Looking forward to many more entries of one of the finest blogs out there. Please remember your friends when you have a big-time book contract, ‘kay!

The music was a nice bonus – the writing is certainly the thing with your blog, and the reason to return so often.
Comics! Politics! Good Stuff! What’s not to love?

Congrats on the new digs
I’m glad to follow you this way – and I know that for me, I was far more interested in your commentary on the tracks you’d chosen then listening to the tracks themselves.
And if this has the added bonus of getting you away from the mad thrashings of a hopefully dying system, all the better.

I was a fan of the music links but it is the writing that keeps me coming back.
And also makes me feel like a lazy ass for not posting as regularly as you do.

Lead on, MacDuff!

Well, I’ll certainly stick around. I mean, you’re still probably going to do Captain Marvel posts, and those are worth stopping by for all by themselves.
In all seriousness, I’m a late-comer to your blog who originally came for the music but learned to appreciate the writing, so I’ll keep coming back, music or no.

Congrats on the big move. I’ll still be hanging around. This is where the cool kids go.

There was music?
I’m reckoning, as ever, on the perfect unfolding. Fair winds in the new waters. Stay free.

Welcome aboard the WP ship! It’s pretty cool over here and cooler now that you’re on. Yeah, I’ll not lie, I’ll miss your great tunes. Throw me a punk bone once in a while, eh?
On the other hand, how could I pass up your “what the hell am I doing” posts? You have no idea how many of those gave me a chuckle when I needed it. Keep on keeping on, brother! The times they are a changing and we shall change right along with ya, xoxox

Well I made the long haul over the Internet, from the old premises when I saw you’d gone, to follow the writing so I guess that puts me in the “engaged readership”.
It was a hell of a journey but I know you’ll make it worthwhile.

It feels like home already with more room to breathe – and Baltic Fleet on the playlist – to quote the Small Faces “It’s all too beautiful”

I’m on board. The new digs look nice so far, and I’m sure they’ll only improve.
I plan to stick with the music emphasis for now. We’ll see how it goes.

The clash, comics, good writing! I will follow that to the gates of hell! ( might have to elbow all those politicians looking for Bin laden)

here with ya, andrew.
howdy.
whatever format you use -or eschew formats altogether -i’m sure it’ll still be you just the same, and that’s the ticket for me.
man, i do *not* keep my blogroll on a stylesheet -but rather copied to each page as made.
that’s a ton of pages. i have gotten lazy/picky about adding new urls (new people) but rarely am tasked to *update* a link, especially a good’un where there’s no debate.
ak. at least i’ll do my front page first. just not tonight… ak!

I was gonna bring a jello mold or a tuna casserole over, but my oven broke.

So jealous Andrew, I have been itching to jump ship in regards to Blogspot. I started mojophenia at a similar time to yourself and now find men in suits, sunglasses and ear pieces sitting outside. Paranoia has set in :O) Armagideon Time looks very cool now, keep enjoying what you do !

The music was always just a nice extra for me. Your writing is incredibly sharp, and that’s why I have you bookmarked. I can get music anywhere, but something worth reading is more difficult to come by.

Staying is not a question. I’ve learned FAR too much from your blog to be willing to go away & miss something even cooler. I’ll miss some of the music, certainly, though I never was a fan of punk. But I’ve got a great deal more joy out of the writing & comics anyway (except during Halloween, when it was about 50/50, maybe 60/40 in favour of the music) so not a deal. Hope the new space becomes all that you want it to be.

I hadn’t heard about the music blog shakedown this time, but I’ve still got dead bookmarks from about a year and a half ago when a crapload of my fave music blogs went dark. Love the new place, and glad to have a one-stop-shopping destination for my comics/music/Woo-bin reading needs.

Slightly disappointed by the move away from music links, but not overly so. Hopefully some appropriate music will be mentioned now and again. Thanks for reminding me of lots of music I’d forgotten or neglected and introducing me to artists I had never been aware of. Hope the new approach goes well, will still visit regularly.
