Split end it all

March 8th, 2012

Is is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous bad hair days? Or to take a pair of clippers against a sea of unruly locks, and by a new ‘do end them?

These were the existential style questions raised by Charles Antell Salons, whose 1952 ad campaign for “Formula 9″ shampoo and conditioner eschewed the customary Eros tropes for hair care marketing in favor of a pitch worthy of ol’ Thanatos himself:

Still need more convincing? Well, just ask these famous ladies!*

“You said the anger would come back just as the full body and natural waves did.” – Anne Sexton

“Out of the ash I rise with my red hair and I need a stellar conditioner.” – Sylvia Plath

“The extraordinary woman depends on the extraordinary hair care regimen.” – Virginia Woolf
